 The Community Leader's Change Playbook •  Nancy Dering Mock | Nancy Dering, Inc. - 301 A

Community leaders are increasingly expected to do more than maintain the status quo. To be effective, they must be able to discern a desired future for their respective community or region and provide leadership for that change. This workshop provides an overview of the process of leading and achieving change in a community/regional context. It also will engage the participants in a discussion of how best to integrate the concepts presented into their respective leadership development programs.


About the Speaker: Nancy Dering Mock's practice focuses on organization and leadership development. She has extensive experience as a consultant, facilitator, curriculum designer, and volunteer leader for community leadership programs.  She presented a workshop at ALP 2021 virtual conference and designed the "Leadership Theory and Application" module for ALP's Certified Community Leadership Practitioner (CCLP) Certification program. Nancy is also the author of a series of six books. From 1986 through 2007, Nancy was adjunct faculty at the H. John Heinz School of Public Policy and Management at Carnegie Mellon University, designing and presenting seminars for Executive Development programs. Nancy received her Bachelor’s degree from Elizabethtown College and her Master’s, with highest honors, from Temple University. In July 2001, Nancy was selected and participated in the prestigious Program for Senior Executives in State and Local Government at the John F. Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University. She is married to Phil Mock, a retired U.S. Army Colonel. Together, their family includes five children and seven grandchildren, and they enjoy travel, music, and reading.


 Impacting Youth Leadership through Higher Education Partners and College Credit • Courtney Hutcheson & Kellie Toon | Leadership Knoxville, TN & Pellissippi State Community College - 301 B

Elevate your Youth Program by providing college credit to your participants. In this session, Courtney and Kellie will discuss ways to partner with your local higher education institutions to provide a unique dual enrollment experience. We will explore ways to marry your curriculum to a college-level course and leverage community partners to take your program to the next level.  

About the Speakers: Courtney Hutcheson is the Director of Leadership Programs at Leadership Knoxville. A native of Knoxville,  Hutcheson earned her Bachelor’s degree from the University of Tennessee as well as her Master’s degree in Elementary Education. She has a passion for working with youth and encouraging students to get engaged, find their passion, and form lasting relationships that will benefit them personally and our city in the future! She currently serves as an ALP Ambassador for Tennessee and on the Tennessee Association of Community Leadership and Girls on the Run Boards. When she is not working, she enjoys spending time with her husband and two children.


Dr. Kellie Toon is the Vice President of Academic Affairs at Pellissippi State Community College in Knoxville, Tennessee. She has 27 years of a strong academic background committed to faculty, staff and student success. She spent her early career in K-12 before transitioning into higher education, where she has taught Communication Studies and Leadership Development at the University of North Carolina Chapel Hill and Pellissippi State. Dr. Toon has led the college as the SACSCOC Quality Enhancement Director, Title III Grant Director, and the founding director of the Pellissippi Academic Center for Excellence, the college's first center for teaching and learning. Dr. Toon is an active leader in her community and fosters community leadership and growth through her role on the Board of Directors for Leadership Knoxville. Dr. Toon has her doctoral degree in Higher Education Administration from the University of Tennessee Knoxville, her Master's degree in Mass Communication from UNC - Chapel Hill, and her Bachelor of Arts in Political Science from the University of Texas at Austin.


Leading with and Leveraging Polarities: A Both/And Approach to Flourishing Individuals, Teams, and Communities • John Yeager | Leadership Marshall County, IN -  301 C

Take a deep dive into the mechanics of polarity thinking so you can bring this strategic process back to your respective community leadership organization. Polarities are pairs of values, competencies, or strategic objectives that seem to oppose one another but are actually interdependent.  Common leadership polarities are: Accountability and Support, Individual and Team, Get the Job Done and Build Relationships, Continuity (Stability) and Transformation (Change), Justice and Mercy, Intent and Impact, Direct and Empower. In this highly interactive workshop, participants will develop competency in identifying, mapping out, and leveraging common polarities in the community.

About the Speaker:  John Yeager is the Program Director for Leadership Marshall County in Indiana.  He is also the Founder and Chief Education Officer at The Yeager Leadership Group, where he consults with corporate, school, and athletic teams.  He was an educator for over 40 years at the high school and college levels.  John has a Doctorate in Education and a Masters in Applied Positive Psychology.  He is the author/co-author of 4 books, including The Coaching Zone: Next Level Leadership in Sports.

About the Speaker:  As Director of Community Partnerships at the Kansas Leadership Center, Racquel Thiesen works to support and strengthen local leadership programs throughout Kansas and across the United States. As a lead member of the civic engagement team, she also develops and executes strategies that mobilize KLC alumni who serve in elected and appointed roles to help build the civic culture for better progress on the tough community challenges in Kansas. Racquel has worked with community leadership programs in some capacity for more than 25 years and cares passionately about elevating the support and services available to community programs from KLC. She particularly enjoys energizing leadership development directors and volunteers to consider new ideas and dream larger for their local programs.

In this workshop, you will be presented with simple yet powerful activities you can facilitate when speakers are late or don’t show up at all!  What to do when you have gaps in your agenda. Participants will learn fun and engaging activities to enhance the leadership skills of your participants. Each activity can be implemented with the resources you have on hand or with no props / pre-planning whatsoever. This workshop will be fun, interactive and provide you with several powerful learning tools for your class members while enhancing your skills as a facilitator! You never know when you might be called on to be a "spontaneous" leader!

About the Speaker: Over 30 years ago, Dick Hammond formed Leadership On The Move, LLC. Since then, he has facilitated leadership skills enhancement programs for over 60,000 participants. His main passion lies in the local community leadership programs and non-profit organizations. Dick is a certified Challenge Course Practitioner. With his wife Lura, he owns the "Leading Edge Challenge Course" at Stony Ranch from which they have facilitated thousands of participants safely through the Challenge Course team-building experience.
