Mission

To create, inspire and support a dynamic network of leaders whose increased awareness and commitment to service will energize Oklahomans to shape Oklahoma's future.

Description

In 1986, a group of Oklahomans began discussions based on the belief that we all have a stake in developing the prosperity and confronting the problems of our state. They shared the conviction that our leadership must understand the complex differences and relationships that drive Oklahoma in order to find effective solutions. From this came Leadership Oklahoma, an organization designed to create a network of leaders whose increased awareness and commitment to service will energize Oklahomans to shape the state's future. The LOK Adult Program is an educational, issues-oriented ten-month class, offered annually to 50 Oklahoma leaders from diverse backgrounds, designed to inspire collaboration with other LOK graduates to take action to move Oklahoma forward. Youth LOK is designed to develop in our youth a hope, pride and responsibility for Oklahoma’s future. Each summer 50 high school seniors participate in a week-long educational journey throughout our state to learn more about Oklahoma’s resources, careers and its people. LOK is making a difference. Our graduates are actively developing real solutions to make Oklahoma a better state through leadership in the private, public, and nonprofit sectors. LOK is about collaborating with others and working for a better Oklahoma.

Programs

LOK Adult Program

Target Audience: Adult
Average Size: More than 50
Tuition: $2000 - $2500

The founding program of Leadership Oklahoma is its educational, issues-oriented ten-month adult program offered annually. Monthly sessions are held in various communities throughout the state. Each year Oklahoma leaders who represent a wide geographic base and diverse backgrounds and vocations are selected to participate. Each class is exposed to the many social and environmental complexities of the state in order to stimulate inquiry, analysis and independent development of solutions for the public good. Class members meet and talk with Oklahoma’s current leaders and explore the state’s opportunities, needs, issues and resources. From the awareness developed and the information obtained, class members are inspired to collaborate with other LOK graduates to take action to make a positive difference for Oklahoma.

Membership Activities

Target Audience: Adult
Average Size: Not Applicable
Tuition: Less than $500

LOK maintains an active network of its approximately 1,381 graduates from 166 communities by offering continuing opportunities for professional development and involvement. On-going activities for members to increase awareness of critical issues and to foster the connectedness of the statewide network are provided. A series of programs provide diverse educational experiences from lectures and dinner discussions with world, national and state leaders to advance leadership initiatives. National and international forums present additional education and networking opportunities. An annual conference focused on a major issue facing Oklahoma is held in the fall. Meaningful discussions on current affairs take place with prominent leaders in both formal and informal settings. In 2011 LOK was a finalist for Oklahoma Nonprofit Excellence Award in the Education Category presented by Oklahoma Center for Nonprofits.

Youth LOK Program

Target Audience: Youth
Average Size: More than 50
Tuition: Free

Leadership Oklahoma recognizes the importance of investing in our youth. We know they are our future leaders and we’re weary of seeing our young talent leave our state. We want to entice our youth to want to stay in or return to Oklahoma. With this in mind, in the summer of 2001, Leadership Oklahoma expanded its mission by building a program that would help us accomplish this goal. Youth Leadership Oklahoma (YLOK) is a program provided free of charge to upcoming high school seniors to develop in our state’s young leaders a hope, pride and responsibility for Oklahoma’s future. Each year more than 50 high school students are selected from across the state to make up YLOK. The students take a one-week bus journey during June to various locations in our State to learn more about Oklahoma’s resources and its people. After students complete the YLOK summer experience they become part of the Youth Leadership Oklahoma network.
