Leadership Iowa (LI) exists to educate, inspire and grow a network of informed leaders and to encourage their ongoing local and statewide engagement to create a better future for Iowans.
Founded in 1982, Leadership Iowa is Iowa’s premier issues-awareness and leadership program for Iowa professionals. Each year, 40 participants representing public and private sectors throughout the state are selected to the program. The class meets once a month from October through June in various parts of the state for two-day sessions. Each session addresses a significant issue facing Iowa, including such topics as government, economic development, education, and agriculture. Leadership Iowa provides participants with a multitude of opportunities for networking and discussion with their classmates, Leadership Iowa alumni, ABI members and leaders throughout the state.
Target Audience: Youth
Average Size: 20 - 30
Mission: To educate, inspire and develop young leaders as the foundation for Iowa’s future economic growth and to encourage their on-going involvement in local communities and the state to create better future for all Iowans.
Overview: Students gather to learn about key issues in Iowa and Iowa industries; network with business leaders, entrepreneurs, legislators and others; compete in a team business simulation; learn marketing skills for career development; enhance leadership skills; and participate in a mentor relationship with a business professional in the student’s area of interest.
This is a week-long program conducted in Des Moines during the summer, followed by two additional day-long sessions in the fall and winter.
