ALP Ambassador Spotlight: Tara Sargent, D.Ed., CCLP

We’re proud to feature Dr. Tara Sargent, Executive Director of Leadership Washington County in Hagerstown, Maryland, in this month’s ALP Ambassador Spotlight! Tara’s leadership journey reflects persistence, courage, and a deep commitment to creating meaningful change in her community.

From Participant to Purpose-Driven Leader
Tara first discovered Leadership Washington County as a participant in the Class of 2008 — an experience that opened her eyes to the role community leadership could play in shaping the place she has called home for 25 years. She stayed connected, serving on a committee and joining the board soon after graduation.

Then, in a pivotal moment in the organization’s history, Tara was asked to step in as Executive Director — charged with helping lead LWC off the brink of financial hardship and into a new era of stability. Fifteen years later, Tara continues to champion leaders in Washington County, Maryland, while remaining rooted in the same mission that drew her in: education as a catalyst for change.

A Proud Professional Milestone
In November 2024, Tara achieved a hallmark accomplishment by earning her Certified Community Leadership Practitioner (CCLP) designation, reflecting her dedication to strengthening her impact, her field, and the leaders she serves.

Finding Connection & Confidence in ALP
Through the CCLP program, Tara discovered a community that energized her growth — offering the encouragement, shared learning, and connection she had hoped to find. The experience not only strengthened her leadership skills but also renewed her belief in the power of this professional network.

“I felt like I was finally at a point in my career where I could take on the Ambassador role with the confidence and attention it deserves,” she says.

Now, she’s excited to pay that forward as an ALP Ambassador,  helping ensure others feel welcomed and supported from the start.

Guided by Determination and a Vision for Justice
Tara is inspired by the phrase:
 “Nevertheless, she persisted.”

It’s a reminder of the courage required to push back against injustice, and the responsibility leaders have to speak up, stand firm, and protect the rights of those whose voices are too often silenced.

She also embraces the idea:
“What would you do if you knew you could not fail?”, encouraging leaders to pursue possibilities with boldness and heart.

Life Beyond Leadership
When she’s not connecting leaders or building programs, Tara loves reading (fiction and nonfiction alike), spending time outdoors hiking or biking, and traveling near and far.
Leadership Washington County recently graduated its 38th class, and preparations are already underway for its 40th anniversary year in 2026–2027, an exciting milestone in the community’s story.
