Aten Earns Certified Community Leadership Practitioner (CCLP) Designation
The Association of Leadership Programs (ALP) proudly recognizes Carol Walker Aten, Founder/Director of Leadership Portland, Maine, as the newest recipient of the Certified Community Leadership Practitioner (CCLP) designation.The Certified Community Leadership Practitioner (CCLP) program was developed in response to membership feedback to provide extensive ongoing training opportunities for Community Leadership Program professionals. The CCLP designation provides Community Leadership Program professionals with an incentive to achieve excellence in professional performance with mastery of essential skills. The development of the Certified Community Leadership Practitioner program began in 2016, with the first CORE training course offered in 2019 in conjunction with the ALP National Conference held that year in Tulsa, Oklahoma. 23 Community Leadership professionals participated in the first cohort. Since 2019, nearly 100 CLP professionals have completed the required 16 hours of CORE training.
Over forty individuals, including Aten, have completed the process, passed the certification exam, and earned the CCLP designation.
About Carol Walker Aten, CCLP:
Carol Walker Aten is Founder/Director of Leadership Portland, Maine. She received her MA in Art History and Museum Studies from Boston University and a BFA from the University of Michigan. Carol started her leadership journey as a graduate of Leadership Seacoast (NH) while serving as an Executive Director of a local museum. That experience led her to increase her involvement in local community initiatives. Carol has extensive leadership and volunteer expertise serving as a foundation trustee, a community bank corporator, nonprofit boards, service clubs, and municipal budget committees. Carol’s professional experience includes nonprofit management of small to mid-sized organizations, as well as organizational development consulting. She is a graduate of Leadership New Hampshire, Leadership Seacoast, and Leadership Maine.
After a move to Portland, Maine, Carol founded Leadership Portland with the support of community leaders and Portland Public Library. Leadership Portland is the city’s only civic education program, designed for individuals eager to make a difference by exploring vital social, political, and economic issues in the local context. The program fosters local civic engagement, embraces community complexities, and sparks deep learning and collaboration. Leadership Portland is currently recruiting for its fifth class, and has launched a new Advisory Board populated by very enthusiastic alumni.
