Leadership Connections | Making Curriculum Impactful and Mission-Aligned Using Kolb’s Learning Styles Inventory

Community leadership programs are most powerful when curriculum design intentionally aligns with how adults learn, process, and apply new information. In this highly interactive session, John Cherry, CCLP, will explore how the results of the Learning Styles Inventory — specifically David Kolb’s Learning, Thinking, Working Styles assessment — can be deeply integrated into leadership curriculum to maximize participant growth and program impact.
Drawing from the model used by Leadership Knoxville, this workshop will demonstrate how assessment data can move beyond individual awareness and become a strategic design tool. Participants will experience how learning styles inform program day structure, speaker selection, facilitation approaches, experiential components, and reflection strategies — ensuring that every element aligns with mission, purpose, objectives, and intended outcomes.
This session is not simply about understanding an assessment; it is about embedding it into the DNA of your program to create cohesive, intentional, and transformational leadership experiences.
ALP Exchange: CRM Tools

This ALP Exchange session is an open, peer-driven conversation designed to surface questions, challenges, and best practices that don't always make it onto an Affinity Group meeting agenda but impact nearly every leadership program.
Together, we'll explore CRM tools and how programs are managing participant data, relationships, and program operations, including:
- Choosing, implementing, and evaluating CRM tools for your program's needs
- Tracking alumni engagement, program milestones, and participant journeys
- Data integrity, privacy, and access considerations
- Integration with existing systems, workflows, and reporting processes
- What platforms and approaches peers are using right now—and what they'd do differently
This is a collaborative space to share what's working, ask honest questions, and learn from fellow ALP members navigating similar decisions.

Peer Connections – Beyond the Core: Exploring College Programs, New Resident Engagement, and Issue-Based Leadership

This Peer Connections session brings together three innovative approaches that expand the reach and impact of community leadership programs. In this peer-driven conversation, you'll hear directly from ALP members who are doing this work well and explore how these models might fit into your own program strategy.
Together, we'll dive into:
- College Programs – How leadership curriculum can be adapted for undergraduate settings, what content translates well, and how college programs can serve as a pipeline for future community leaders (Racquel Thiesen | Kansas Leadership Center)
- New Resident/Intro Programs – How to design programs that connect newcomers and lifelong residents to your community; balancing city insights with network building; and creating pathways from intro experiences to deeper leadership involvement (Mike Zwiefelhofer | Leadership San Francisco's IntroSF)
- Community Issue-Based Programs – How to use deep exploration of complex issues as a "learning lab" for advanced leadership development for program alumni (Lynn Wood, CCLP | Leadership Wisconsin's Community Leadership 2.0)
This is a collaborative space to ask honest questions and learn from peers who have successfully implemented these program models.
